The state space and input/output forillulatioils of inodel predictive control are compared and preference is given to the former because of the industrial interest in multivaria,ble constra,ined problems. Recently, by abaildoning the assumption of a finite output horizon several researchers lmve derived powerful stability results for linear and noillillear systems with and without constraints, for the noininal case and in the presence of inodel uac.ert,ainty. Seine of these results are reviewed. Optimistic speculations about the future of MPC: conclude the paper.
